                                                                THE FILM CHAIN

Production:

When producing a film there are 3 stages involved -----> Pre-production, Production & Post production.

PRE-PRODUCTION :
This is the stage in which all the planning for the project takes place. During pre-production, the production is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. The script, if not already complete, is written at this stage.
PRODUCTION :
This is the stage at which all the filming is carried out. All scenes planned out in pre-production are filmed at the relevant locations. Each scene is filmed as many times as the director deems fit, to ensure the best quality scenes will be used to construct the film. This is where the strength of the pre-production work is put to the test.
POST-PRODUCTION :
This is the stage in which the film is assembled by the editor. The first job of the film editor is to build a rough cut taken from sequences (or scenes) based on individual shots. The purpose of the rough cut is to select and order the best shots. The next step is to create a fine cut by getting all the shots to flow smoothly in a seamless story. Trimming - the process of shortening scenes by a few minutes, seconds, or even frames - is done during this phase.

Main producers of films in America are :

James Cameron , Michael Mann , Spike Lee , Steven Speilberg , Tony Scott , John Singleton and there are many more.

The name of the of the main studios in America is DreamWorks, is an American film production company which produces and develops films, television programming, and video games. Currently, DreamWorks' films are marketed and distributed by Walt Disney studio motion pictures under its touchstone pictures banner.
Owners -----> Paramount Pictures and Reliance entertainment

Ownership of the studio have an impact on what films studio makes         because they depend on the audience. For example, they will aim a specific film at a specific audience , such as teenagers.

An independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. In addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies, independent films are also produced and/or distributed by subsidiaries of major film studios.

Distribution:

Distribution is the way in which something is shared out among a group or spread over a area.

Films get from the edit house to the cinema by the distributor coming to an agreement with the cinema on when to release the latest film that has recently been edited in the editing house, once this is agreed the film will be ready to watch at the cinemas.

Film producers prepare and then supervise the making of a film before presenting the product to a financing entity or a film distributor. Either employed by a production company or independent, they help the creative people as well as the accounting personnel, however producers could chose to put the film straight on DVD , meaning producers have their say in it as well.

Traditionally distributing a film they had to do it through theatrical release. In this process the distributers need to find the right time slot so they are able to release their film , otherwise they will not have the right time to release it.

However, it is now changed on how we distribute a film , the main one now is through via Youtube , where you can simply upload a film and any one and any audience can watch it. Lots of people prefer this way as it is easy to access and best thing is its free and everyone loves things that are free. A good example to prove this is easy we uploaded our swede up on Youtube where we wanted as many people to watch it.

Film Festivals

A film festival is an extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Overtime , films showed outdoor has increased. This is where a big screen in a large park on area and you can sit on the grass on a blanket and the community join to watch. The most popular one was the car park screen , where you would sit in your cars and watch a film, this is seen in the film 'Grease' , but you don't see them no more. Film festivals are typically annual events.
Film festival roles in distribution is the get the most bids against other competitors and if they win the bid they are able to show there film where they want.

Distributors decide to release a film on one particular weekend rather than another because it might be a time where no other films are being shown so they are most likely to watch it , or the film is based on something that is recently coming up. A good example, is Halloween this year was a weekend and the film that came out on that time was 'ouigi' and because this is scary and Halloween is scary , teenagers and adults are most likely to go and watch it as they are not going to go trick or treating, and this could bring in more sales for the distributor.

Distribution is essential to the film chain as the film chain is the part what releases the film for audiences to be attracted to. If this wouldn't happen no one would see the latest film to be released and they distributor would get no sales.

Marketing:

Marketing is the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
The difference from marketing to distributors is that marketers take an idea and spread it far and wide, such as advertising and promoting. Whereas distributors build a channel that they control and that is used to connect things with people.

A film that is currently being released is Ouiga.

This is the poster that promotes the film for viewers to see.

This was one way the film was advertised , through snapchap , this was free so lots of people where able to see it and as your are able to watch a part of it , you get a insight of the film and makes you want to watch it.

The films trailer was also on youtube , youtube is worldwide and also free so its easy access for people to see.

These are all examples of the marketing used to advertise this recent film. There are posters, sponsers , Youtube trailers , facebook pages. ect....

A box office is a place where tickets are sold to the public for admission to an event. Patrons may perform the transaction at a countertop, through an unblocked hole through a wall or window, or at a wicket. This is where tickets are bought or reserved.
The box office is useful to identify the success of the film because they can see how many tickets have been bought or reserved , so they can see if they have made sales or lost it. If it weren't because of the box office you wont be able to see the what's been bought.
The producers and the studios get the money from a successful film. With the money they pay the studios a fee for the right to show the film. This fee is based on how many times the film is shown, not on how many seats are filled, and they also earn money from people buying the tickets to watch the film.

Cinemas encourage audiences to visit rather than staying at home by giving you deals such as orange Wednesday , you are surrounded by family and you get the feel that you are in universal by having the big screen in front of you and the loud surround sound.

Ancillary markets are non-theatrical markets for feature films, like home video, television, Pay Per View, VOD, Internet streaming, airlines and others. This allows the producers to gain money even after the box office has gained some of the money aswell.

BFI
The British film institute encourages the development of the arts of film, television and the moving image throughout the United Kingdom, to promote their use as a record of contemporary life and manners.
The BFI helps provide supports for digital projects which develops to increase audiences.
